Return To:

Welcome to Great Lakes Loan Closets, operated by Michigan Loan Closets, Inc. This website is designed to help you find free or low-cost home medical equipment in your community. To find resources in your area, simply click on your county at the bottom of this page. A list of organizations and their programs will appear. Local programs will appear first, followed by state programs and national programs. We have also included some ramp programs.

All of the organizations have been contacted to make sure the information is correct. We will continue to search for other organizations, and will add them to the website as quickly as possible. We update this website throughout the year.

Our Mission

The mission of Great Lakes Loan Closets (Michigan Loan Closets, Inc.) is to provide a directory of loan closets and other resources for people who need medical equipment, but are unable to afford it. Loan closets loan medical equipment to people for free, or at low-cost. We also work to raise awareness of loan closets as both a resource for those who need this equipment, and as places where people may donate their no longer needed equipment. We will advocate for those in need, when appropriate, to raise awareness of the need that exists.

What's a Loan Closet?

Loan Closets, also known as medical equipment loaning programs, lend home medical equipment to those in need. Most programs receive their equipment from individuals who have acquired the equipment and no longer need it. By donating their equipment to a loan closet, they are helping their neighbors who may not be able to afford the equipment. Loan closets typically have durable medical equipment (DME) such as wheelchairs, shower chairs, bedside commodes, walkers, crutches, canes, and high-rise toilet seats. Some may have hospital beds or electric wheelchairs available too. Each loan closet is unique, with its own set of eligibility requirements, equipment, and loan period.

Please call first to see if the organization has the equipment you need.

Loan Closet inventories change quickly, dependent upon donations and demand for the equipment. It is always a good idea to call an organization first to see if they have the equipment you need before going there.

Please respect any eligibility requirements.

Please make sure you meet the eligibility requirements before you ask to borrow equipment from an organization. Sometimes an organization's funding restricts who they may serve. Other times organizations have a very limited supply of equipment to loan, so they need to make sure it is available for their communities.

...Most importantly, please clean and return the equipment you borrow so that others can benefit from it too.

A note about our name Great Lakes Loan Closets:

We started this online directory in the summer of 2012 as Michigan Loan Closets, Inc. Our goal was to help those in need find medical equipment resources within their communities. In the Spring of 2013 we were asked to add resources for Northern Indiana, and in 2014 we added resources for Wisconsin. Since we have grown, we wanted to add a new name that would reflect the change, so we chose Great Lakes Loan Closets.

We would like to thank the 300+ organizations who have allowed us to list their programs on this directory. We would also like to thank them, along with the health care professionals and individuals who have offered their support, feedback and suggestions. We welcome your comments, and hope you will feel free to email us through our contact link at the top of the page.

We hope this directory will help you find the medical equipment you need, and we hope the medical equipment you receive will help you deal with the challenges you’re facing.
